Consider Costa Rica for using
Bitcoin for everyday transactions
Costa Rica has emerged as one of the few jurisdictions globally where
cryptocurrency is widely accepted as a financial asset.
However :
legal obstacles persist regarding the ownership and trading of Bitcoin.
According to Jan3 :
a prominent cryptocurrency technology company, the Latin American state
is contemplating potential cryptocurrency legislation.
The company stated in a report on X that such legislation would
"weaken the ability to freely use Bitcoin as money for daily transactions."
The government does not regulate cryptocurrencies as a means of payment
and the Central Bank of Costa Rica (CBCR) has declared these asset
classes to be outside the national banking system.
Nevertheless
cryptocurrencies are accepted in many stores in Costa Rica.
As a result :
primary concerns have revolved around Know Your Customer (KYC)
practices and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) measures.
Jan3 wrote:
"Concerns associated with the cryptocurrency space have often played a role in
these discussions, with KYC and AML practices at the heart of proposed measures."
Jan3 added that :
- these discussions align with the company's mission to assist in
- designing Bitcoin policies that enhance economic well-being
- rather than restrict potential growth opportunities.
Additionally :
Costa Rican Deputy Johana Obando is working on legislation to regulate
and recognize cryptocurrencies within the legal jurisdiction.
The deputy has "pledged to lead these discussions in the right direction
considering Bitcoin as a tool that can improve the lives of all Costa Ricans."
Furthermore :
Costa Rica offers competitive advantages to cryptocurrency miners because
the country possesses one of the highest productions of renewable energy globally.
In terms of tourism in Costa Rica
Jan3 pointed out that the country has become an "ideal homeland"
for the Bitcoin Jungle.
This project aims to adopt Bitcoin in all economic and social spheres in Costa Rica.
Centered around the Golden Triangle region, it aims to cover the entire country.
Bitcoin Jungle
has introduced its digital payment wallet
which helps Costa Rican merchants save credit card fees, along with other benefits
announced for blockchain technology use.
The company stated:
"Foundational projects like Bitcoin Jungle are key to portraying Bitcoin's true
attributes to politicians, but support from Bitcoin
allies like Johana Obando is also crucial.
